I guess Mother Nature has decided to flex her muscles at the start of 2025. We’ve had repeated snow storms since January 1, which led to a large amount of your calls and e-mails about why residential streets aren’t getting plowed. I get it, we all pay taxes and expect city services to be performed efficiently. I’ll reiterate what I heard from Akron’s Public Works Manager, Jon Malish on our snow removal program, so we all understand how this works.
First off, Akron is responsible for 832 centerline miles of pavement, and our snow and ice operations/routes are broken down into three basic groups; Primaries, Secondary and Residentials. These routes have been developed over the years to address the needs of our city. Our standard is that we do not go into residential streets until an event reaches the 5 inches of snow threshold, but with that being said, if you need your street plowed or salted, please call 311 or use the 311 app to make a service request. The city will handle these on a case by case basis.
